One of the most chilling facts about the Maccabiah disaster is that the fall itself was not the only cause of death. Some of the athletes who fell into the Yarkon River were rescued alive, but they were exposed to severe pollution, dangerous bacteria, and fungi in the water. Two of the victims died days and weeks later due to infections and complications that developed in their bodies. There is a deep spiritual lesson in this: sometimes the real wound is not the one we see at first. Some injuries continue to work silently, and only with time does their true depth become clear. In life as well, not everyone who appears healed on the outside has truly recovered within.
