במקרה מ-2024 שתועד בוידאו, הלקוח היהודי ג’ונתן הירש נכנס למקום עם בנו בן ה-5 כדי לשתות קפה ולשחק שחמט. הבעלים התעמת איתו בשל מגן דוד על כובעו, כינה את הסמל “אלים”, שאל אותו אם הוא ציוני וגירש אותם מהמקום.

הסערה סביב בית הקפה הסלימה ב-7 באוקטובר 2024, ביום השנה לטבח, כאשר המקום השיק תפריט פרובוקטיבי שכלל משקאות בשמות כמו “Iced in Tea Fada” (משחק מילים על אינתיפאדה) ו-“Sweet Sinwar”.

בעל המקום, עבד אל-רחים חרארה, טען כי השם סינוואר הוא רק שם משפחה פלסטיני נפוץ, אך המבקרים ראו בכך מחווה ישירה למנהיג חמאס יחיא סינוואר. המשפט הפדרלי בתיק צפוי להיפתח בסוף אוקטובר בסן פרנסיסקו.

The pro-Palestinian “Jerusalem Coffee House” in Oakland has closed down less than three years after opening, following three lawsuits alleging religious discrimination and antisemitism—including a federal lawsuit involving the U.S. Department of Justice, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), and the Brandeis Center.

In a 2024 incident captured on video, Jewish patron Jonathan Hirsch entered the establishment with his 5-year-old son to get coffee and play chess. The owner confronted him over a Star of David on his hat, called the symbol “violent,” asked if he was a Zionist, and expelled them from the premises.

The controversy surrounding the cafe escalated on October 7, 2024, the anniversary of the massacre, when the establishment launched a provocative menu featuring drinks with names such as “Iced in Tea Fada” (a pun on Intifada) and “Sweet Sinwar.”

The owner, Abdel Rahim Harara, claimed that Sinwar is merely a common Palestinian surname, but critics viewed it as a direct tribute to Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar. The federal trial for the case is expected to begin in late October in San Francisco.
